Trail and Campground Update

The Hog Island Group Area (aka Youth Area) will be our event campground. Directions are below. Due to hurricane Jeanne, Crooked River is closed. We were out scouting this Saturday, and have found the trails are excellent!. We had a blast. The average level was moderate on the majority of trails. Beginner and advanced trails will be available.

This year, chainsaws will help us clear trails, so bring yours if you have one.

Please look back here and at the message board before going to the rally for any updates.

Members voted at the Spring Rally in Osceola to have the fall rally in the Richloam Wildlife Management District (Withlacoochee State Forest), about 20 minutes north of Tampa, east of Brooksville. The area is a frequent haunt of members, especially for our carnage and fun filled night rides.

This year, Richloam will not only have the usual beginner, intermediate and advanced trails, but will also cater to members looking for trails marked as "insane" and "really insane". Heavy on the skinny pedal!

Our Rally Master, Michael Costello has scouted out the campgrounds that are nearby and will serve us best. Mike has acquired permission for the club to trail ride in Richloam. Croom is near-by, but is not open to off-road vehicles. If you are caught in Croom, we will pretend we do not know you, have never heard of you, and your name will magically dissapear from the club database! Oh, do send our warmest regards to the local Sheriff!!

Hog Island Group Campground (aka Youth Area)
We can have up to 50 persons camping in the group part of Hog Island. The cost is $10 per night per five persons! We will add that to our t-shirt fee. Any spill-over will go to Hog Island proper......all in the same place really. Hog Island camp ground will cost $10 per night per camp site (cash or check only, first come first served). Ordinary vehicles, RV's and towing vehicles will have no problem reaching Hog Island. There is a bath house with toilets and showers. Each site has water, but no electricity. Sadly, no pets are allowed. There are 20 sites, and the public will take some of them. The sign says that the gates will close at 10pm, so try and arrive early (we may have the combination...so walk over if late). Those that need electric hookup and want to bring pets could use the Silver Lake campground where space will be limited. Click here for directions to Silver Lake campground. There are hotels (see below) and a private campground at the intersection of I-75 and SR50.

Rally Directions
Go North on I-75 from Tampa, or South on I-75 from Gainesville. One exit North of State Road 50, leave the interstate at exit 309 (CR673). Head West (actually North) from here on CR673 for about one mile. After one mile, the road turns north and becomes CR476-B. Follow this for 2.87 miles to a t-junction with CR476. Turn left onto CR476 (West) and travel 2.2 miles to CR635. Turn left (South) here, and continue to the Hog Island camp ground entrance one mile straight ahead.

Rally Costs
The Rally Fee (a.k.a "T-shirt fee") is $15 which buys you a rally T-shirt (design featured as the website banner above---thanks to Gordon "Gordo" and Diana Turner!), sticker, your Vehicle Participation Windshield Sticker and all the Rover fellowship you can eat. You will also be able to partake in our famous raffle to win some awesome off-road equipment supplied by our sponsors (see below....Dynaflex Recovery Gear, Lokey Cross Lander, Red Rhino Products, Rovertym Engineering, Reeves Import Motorcars, Tractor Supply Co.), as arranged by Marc Kazmierski the club Vice President. Also, expect our usual Saturday evening Rover-barbeque-dinner ($10 per person) just before the raffle and club business. It is time to choose new officers for the club, so those interested, please let us know in advance lest we surprise you with a new title at the rally!

Rally Notes
We will need a few highly qualified persons to become an FLRC Sheriff for the rally. These fine off-road citizens of above average trail-law-enforcement skills will be called upon to make summary arrests, hold show trials, and otherwise keep us all on the trails. A warning.....bribing these individuals is expected, and customary as they will award some of the most sought after rally awards! All Sheriff's will be required to wear their badge at all times.

Anyone who wants to contribute, please pipe up! We need rally volunteers. Do not be afraid to contact us.

Entrance to Hog Island campground in the Withlacoochee State Forest

Some of us will be there on Thursday, but most (who have a life) will arrive on Friday, with some on Saturday. If you are really keen, feel free to arrive on Monday (keep a campsite for me). During the long weeks prior to the rally, we will be scouting out trails for the rally.....important homework! (watch the bulletin board) As always, lets pay attention to trail safety.....see you at the rally, and drive it like you rented it!

Jonathan Galpin
FLRC President
